Education

Robert is an Associate of the Royal College of Music, a Fellow of the London College of Music and gained a distinction in a Master’s Degree from the University of Leeds. He also holds a Post Graduate Certificate of Education from the Open University and his most recent academic achievement was becoming a Doctor of Musical Arts, conferred by the University of Salford.

The impressive list above outlines only one half of Robert’s educational career, the second half sees Robert in the role of educator. By coincidence this half started where the other ended, at Salford University, where Robert was a euphonium tutor from 1980-1985. Since this time Robert has also been a euphonium tutor at Leeds University, the Royal Northern College of Music, the London College of Music, Hull University, and been in regular demand as a freelance brass specialist delivering lectures and master classes throughout the world. Over the years he has tutored on the National Youth Brass Bands of Great Britain, Wales and Switzerland, and in 2006 was engaged as Musical Director of all three.

Robert has vast experience in all types of education, including peripatetic teaching, classroom teaching and higher education. This not only led to his appointment as the first Director of Brass Band Studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, but also sees him in great demand as an educational consultant; a role he regularly undertakes for varied organisations and education authorities through his own company, Performing Arts Education.
